Getting Your Car Road Trip Ready!
With spring fast approaching and summer just behind it, it's time to get your car road trip ready. The American past time of hitting the highway with friends and family is the perfect way to see all the country has to offer, but doing it in a vehicle that's not up for the task could leave you stranded and spending a few extra nights on the road, and not for a good reason. Before you pack the trunk, head over to your local auto repair shop for pre-trip service inspection that should include the following.
If your car is anywhere near due for an oil change it's best to get it done before you get on the road. Fresh oil and a clean filter will maximize performance and miles per gallon throughout the trip.
Fluid Top Off
A fluid check and top off is a great way to prevent minor issues from growing into big problems. Be sure the coolant, power steering fluid and brake fluid are all at the proper level.
It costs a lot less to have your brakes checked on your own watch than to find out that they were due for a replacement after an accident. Healthy brakes are the key to safe driving and a safe trip.
A new air filter and fresh fuel filter will keep the engine clear and running at peak performance. A new cabin air filter will keep the air in the vehicle fresh and clean.
Hours on the highway can be dreadful without cool AC. Make sure to have the air conditioning system tested so you don't end up cooking as you're cruising.
Belts & Hoses
All belts and hoses should be checked for wear and tear. If your vehicle uses a timing belt and it's due for a replacement, now would be an ideal time to tackle that service. A blown hose or snapped belt could result in catastrophic damage under the hood.
If your vehicle's tires have balding tread or the rubber is bubbling or cracked, you'll want to purchase new ones. A blow out could result in a loss of control. Make sure your car is equipped with a spare tire and the tools necessary to change a flat.
Lights & Wipers
To ensure you're fully visible at all times make sure all headlights, tail lights, reverse lights, brake lights, parking lights and blinkers are in proper working order. Also test your wipers, just in case you get caught in some less than favorable weather.
Review your vehicle's service schedule to find out if it's time for any particular service, such as new spark plugs, transmission service or otherwise. If the car is due, do the right thing and have it done before you leave. Keeping up with maintenance is the best way to prevent breakdowns.
You never know what can happen on a trip, so be sure to prepare a safety kit. It should include first aid items, traffic triangles, road flares and water. Jumper cables or a jump box are also good to have on hand at all times.
